St. John's Wort

Bright yellow pom-pom flowers of Shrubby St. John's Wort.

A Pollinator Powerhouse Shrub

Shrubby St. John's Wort (Hypericum prolificum) is a bomb-proof native shrub. It forms a dense, rounded mound of blue-green foliage. In mid-summer, it is smothered in bright yellow flowers with a prominent boss of bushy stamens that look like little fireworks. Bumblebees go crazy for the pollen.

Why You Need It:

  • Pollinator Value: A top-tier source of pollen for bumblebees.
  • Adaptable: Thrives in dry, rocky soil and heavy clay equally well.
  • Long Blooming: Provides cheerful yellow color for weeks in summer.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade. It is drought-tolerant and tough. It's great for stabilizing a slope or planting in a difficult "hell strip."
