I’ve been digging up Niles since I was two years old.

​Hi, I’m Luke.

If you traveled back in time to my childhood backyard here in Niles, you’d probably trip over a hole. I didn't dig them for treasure, and I didn't dig them to escape. I dug them because I just really loved digging.
​
While other kids were watching cartoons, I was glued to the window watching road crews and excavators, dreaming of the day I’d get to operate the "big stuff."
​
From Mud Pits to Masterpieces I started Salzman Services because I never really grew out of that phase. I just upgraded from a plastic shovel to a Bobcat.
But there’s a deeper reason, too. My family and I have never been the "center of attention" types. You won't find me grabbing the mic to make a speech or trying to be the star of the show.

I prefer to be the guy building the show.

I get my satisfaction from crafting the spaces where you gather. I want to build the patio where you host the family reunion, or the fire pit where you unwind after a long week. I build the backdrop for your memories so I can step back, fade into the background, and know I built something that will last.
When I’m Not on a Machine... I’m probably haunting a local coffee shop in Michiana, chatting with neighbors, or—believe it or not—sitting behind a computer screen.

Fun fact: I built this website myself. (So if there’s a typo, don’t blame the marketing department, blame the guy who usually has dirt under his fingernails).

What's Actually Under Your Patio

LAYER 1 — Excavation: 11 Inches Down
We excavate to a depth of 11 inches, removing all organic material and unstable soil before anything else goes in. This is the step most crews rush or skip — and it's the #1 reason patios sink, shift, and fail within a few seasons.

LAYER 2 — Non-Woven Geotextile Fabric
Before the first piece of stone goes in, we line the excavation with geotextile fabric. It separates your native soil from the base material above it, preventing migration over time. Most local crews don't include this step. We never skip it.

LAYER 3 — 8" Crushed Clean Stone Base
Eight inches of compacted crushed stone is your real foundation. It distributes load, sheds water downward, and — critically — doesn't heave and shift through Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles the way organic or mixed fill does. This layer is where we invest the most time, and it's what separates a 30-year patio from a 3-year one.

LAYER 4 — 1" Chip Stone Bedding
A precise one-inch layer of chip stone creates the perfectly level bed your pavers rest on. This is what gives you a flat, even surface that stays that way — not just at install, but years down the road.

LAYER 5 — The Pavers
Now the pavers go down — cut to fit, set to grade, and checked for level throughout the install. This is the only part most people think about. We think about everything underneath it first.

LAYER 6 — Polymeric Sand
Every joint gets filled and compacted with polymeric sand, which hardens when activated with water. It locks your pavers together, resists weed intrusion, and prevents shifting between individual stones.

LAYER 7 — Concrete Bond Beam
Every edge of every project gets a concrete bond beam. This edge restraint prevents the perimeter from spreading outward over time — one of the most common failure points we see on other contractors' work when we're called in for repairs.
