Here's what we see, in this order of frequency:

Cracked slabs. Concrete is a single monolithic surface, and Michigan winters are unkind to monolithic surfaces. Freeze-thaw cycles expand water trapped in the concrete, and once a hairline crack appears, it grows every single winter until the slab is spider-webbed. There is no invisible repair for cracked concrete — only patches, resurfacing, or full replacement.

Tree root heaving. Mature front-yard trees are one of your home's most valuable landscape assets — and they're also the single biggest threat to a concrete walkway. Root systems grow toward moisture, and the compacted soil under a walkway is often the moistest place in the yard. Over time, roots lift concrete slabs into sharp, uneven planes that no amount of grinding can fully correct. Front Entry Walkways. The front walk from driveway or public sidewalk to the front door is the walkway that carries the most design weight, because it's the one everyone sees. The Details That Separate a Path From a Walkway.

Width Sets the Tone.

More than any other single design choice, width determines how a walkway feels. A 30-inch path is functional but feels tight — two people can't walk it side by side, and delivery drivers with a package sidestep the plants to squeeze past. A 36-inch path meets code minimums but still reads as narrow at the front door of a larger home. A 48-inch path lets two people walk shoulder to shoulder comfortably. A 60-inch path feels generous, ceremonial, estate-scale.

There is no single "right" width. But there is almost always a right width for your specific home — and it's often wider than what's there now. We measure the doorway, the porch dimensions, the driveway width, and the front elevation of the house, then recommend a width that scales to the architecture rather than to whatever the previous walkway happened to be.

Curves Slow the Approach.

A perfectly straight walkway from the driveway to the door is efficient. It's also, in many cases, boring. A gentle curve — even a subtle one — changes how a person experiences the approach. Step 2 — Written Proposal & Material Selection. You receive a detailed proposal with the walkway layout, material recommendations, scope of work, and a fixed-price quote. We bring paver samples so you can see the material in your own outdoor lighting against your home's exterior.

Step 3 — Scheduling & Prep. Once approved, we secure your build date and coordinate any required steps: utility locates, HOA approval (if applicable), permits (if required — most walkways don't need them), and any adjacent landscape work. Peak-season projects book 4–6 weeks out.

How wide should my front walkway be?

For most Michiana homes, 48 inches (4 feet) is the ideal width for a front entry walkway — wide enough for two people to walk side by side comfortably, and generous enough to feel welcoming rather than utilitarian. Smaller homes or garden paths can work at 36 inches, and larger homes with more formal exteriors often benefit from 60-inch widths that scale to the architecture. The minimum functional width for a main entry walk is generally considered 42 inches — narrower than that starts to feel cramped for a primary path.

Can pavers be installed over my existing concrete walkway?

Sometimes — using a polymer-modified bonding mortar overlay system — but only when the existing concrete is structurally sound with no significant cracks, heaving, or settling. In our Michiana climate, most concrete walkways old enough to look outdated are also old enough to have underlying structural problems that make an overlay a bad investment. How do you handle tree roots when building a walkway near mature trees?

We survey root systems during the site visit and adjust the walkway route where possible to preserve major structural roots. When routing around isn't practical, we work with the tree — using a slightly deeper base to accommodate future root growth, installing root barrier fabric on the tree-facing side of the excavation, and choosing paver sizes that can be individually lifted and reset if the tree eventually pushes the surface. What we don't do is cut structural roots to make the walkway installation easier — that's a short-term convenience that can kill the tree over 3–5 years.

Will polymeric sand joints stop weeds from growing between pavers?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Polymeric sand — the joint-locking material we install as the final step of every walkway — hardens into a semi-solid resin-like joint that prevents seeds from germinating in the joints and blocks insects from tunneling. Some weed seeds may still germinate on top of the joints after several years, but they're surface weeds pulled easily by hand, not the destructive root systems that break up cheaper installations. Joints can be topped up and reactivated after 5–10 years if they show wear.

Do you need to remove my old concrete walkway first, or can you build around it?

For nearly every concrete replacement project, we recommend full demolition and haul-off before installing the new walkway. Building alongside a failing concrete path creates an ugly transition, a trip hazard, and a maintenance headache. Building over structurally compromised concrete is even worse. Demolition and disposal are part of the project scope — we handle it, and the cost is quoted upfront so there are no surprises.

How steep can a paver walkway be?

Paver walkways can handle grade changes up to about 5% (a 6-inch rise over 10 feet) as a continuous slope without becoming uncomfortable to walk. For steeper grades, we integrate stone steps or step-out landings to break the elevation into comfortable segments — typically 6- to 7-inch risers with 12- to 15-inch treads. Where accessibility matters, we design walkways to stay at or below the 1:20 grade that meets ADA recommendations for barrier-free routes.

Do paver walkways get slippery when wet or icy?

Paver surface textures range from smooth (like Unilock Umbriano) to heavily textured (like tumbled or split-face pavers), and slip resistance scales with texture. For walkways in high-traffic entry areas or pool-adjacent locations, we recommend textured pavers with a coefficient of friction rated for wet conditions. In winter, paver walkways handle deicing salt significantly better than concrete does, but no walking surface is entirely non-slip when covered in ice — proper snow and ice removal is still required.

Can you integrate landscape lighting into a new walkway?

Yes, and it's dramatically easier and cleaner to install lighting during a new walkway build than to retrofit later. We plan lighting during the design phase — wiring sleeves go in during excavation, transformer locations are set during layout, and fixture placement is coordinated with paver installation so wiring stays hidden and fixtures land exactly where they should. Adding lighting to a completed walkway later is possible but requires cutting into finished work, which is why we always ask about lighting upfront.

How long will a paver walkway last in Michigan winters?

A properly installed paver walkway with our full engineered base will last 30 to 50+ years in the Michiana climate — significantly longer than the 15–30 year functional lifespan of poured concrete in the same conditions.
