Unilock Beacon Hill Smooth XL slab walkway with pea stone joints in Union Pier, MI

Union Pier Michigan Unilock Paver Walkway

Union Pier, MI 49129, USA

This Union Pier homeowner already had a pea-stone walkway running alongside their home — they liked the look, but not the feel. Loose pea stone shifts underfoot and never gives you a solid, level place to step. They wanted the stability of a firm walkway without losing the clean, natural pea-stone aesthetic. So instead of tearing it out and starting over, we upgraded what was already there.

What We Did

We set 12 large-format Unilock Beacon Hill Smooth XL slabs in Opal Blend into the existing walkway, spaced evenly with pea-stone joints between them. The result is a crisp, modern "ladder" walkway: solid slabs give you firm, level footing the whole way to the door, while the pea stone between them keeps the relaxed, natural look the homeowner wanted. The soft grey Opal Blend pairs cleanly with the home's black board-and-batten siding and cedar accents.

Before setting a single slab, we assessed what was already in the ground. We confirmed there was a solid limestone base beneath the pea stone, and that there was enough depth of pea stone to properly support large-format slabs for the long haul. That assessment is the difference between a walkway that stays put and one that rocks and settles — knowing what existing conditions can carry is just as important as building new.

To finish, we stabilized the surrounding pea stone with a binding treatment that locks the loose stone in place, keeping it from scattering into the lawn and planting beds and keeping the whole walkway looking clean and intentional.

The homeowner kept the natural, understated walkway they loved — and gained the firm, stable footing they were missing.

Project Scope:

  • Beacon Hill Smooth XL Slabs (Opal Blend): 12 large-format Unilock slabs set for firm, level footing.

  • Pea-Stone Joints: Open pea-stone spacing between slabs to preserve the existing natural aesthetic.

  • Existing Base Assessment: Confirmed a solid limestone base and sufficient pea-stone depth to support large-format slabs long-term.

  • Pea-Stone Stabilization: Loose stone locked in place with a binding treatment to keep edges clean and contained.
