Leadplant

Silvery foliage and purple flower spikes of Leadplant.

The Deep-Rooted Prairie Gem

Leadplant (Amorpha canescens) is a unique native shrub with stunning silvery-gray foliage. It gets its name from an old myth that its presence indicated lead in the soil (it doesn't!). In summer, it produces spikes of iridescent purple flowers with bright orange anthers. It is incredibly deep-rooted and drought-tolerant.

Why You Need It:

  • Foliage Contrast: The silver leaves stand out beautifully against green plants.
  • Nitrogen Fixer: It improves the soil around it by adding natural nitrogen.
  • Toughness: Thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun. Be patient—it is slow to establish as it builds its massive root system, but it is extremely long-lived once settled.
