Blazing Star (Liatris)

The fuzzy purple flower spikes of Blazing Star, a hardy, drought-tolerant native perennial.

Vertical Drama for the Butterfly Garden

Liatris, or Blazing Star, adds a unique architectural element to the garden with its tall, grassy wands topped with fuzzy purple bottle-brush flowers. Uniquely, the flowers open from the top down. It is a magnet for Monarchs and Swallowtails, often covered in butterflies on warm summer days.

Why You Need It:

  • Vertical Accent: The upright spikes break up the "mound" shape of most other plants.
  • Drought Proof: Grows from a corm (bulb-like root) that stores water.
  • Cut Flower: Makes an excellent, long-lasting cut flower for bouquets.

Planting Tips:

Requires Full Sun and well-drained soil. If planted in heavy clay that stays wet in winter, the corms may rot, so amend your soil with compost or gravel.
