Michigan Lily

The nodding, orange-red flower of a native Michigan Lily, which attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.

A Rare Native Beauty

The Michigan Lily (Lilium michiganense) is our stunning native version of the Tiger Lily. It features tall stalks with whorled leaves, topped with nodding, orange-red flowers that curve backward (recurved petals). Each petal is heavily spotted with brown. It is a majestic sight in a wet meadow or woodland edge.

Why You Need It:

  • Showy Native: One of the most spectacular flowers in the Michigan flora.
  • Hummingbird Favorite: Hummingbirds and large butterflies love the hanging blooms.
  • Naturalizing: Spreads slowly to form a lovely colony in the right conditions.

Planting Tips:

Prefers Full Sun to Part Shade with "wet feet, dry ankles"—meaning moist soil that drains well. It is excellent for damp meadows. Protect from deer, who love lilies.
