Pennsylvania Sedge

A soft, green carpet of Pennsylvania Sedge growing under trees.

The No-Mow Lawn for Shade

Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is the ultimate solution for dry, shady spots where grass refuses to grow. It is a low-growing, fine-textured native plant that looks like a soft, swirling green carpet. It spreads slowly to form a dense mat that never needs mowing (though you can mow it once a year if you want a tidy look).

Why You Need It:

  • Lawn Alternative: Replaces struggling turf grass under big oak or maple trees.
  • Soft Texture: Very pleasant to walk on barefoot.
  • Drought Tolerant: Thrives in the dry shade that kills other plants.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Dry Shade to Part Shade. Plant plugs about 12 inches apart, and they will fill in to form a carpet. It is a key component of a low-maintenance "green mulch."
