Canadian Hemlock

A Canadian Hemlock, a graceful native evergreen with soft needles, perfect for shade or hedges.

The Elegant Evergreen of the North

Canadian Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is the most graceful of our native evergreens. Unlike stiff spruces, it has soft, feathery needles and flexible branches that sway in the wind. It can be grown as a massive specimen tree or sheared into a dense, shade-tolerant hedge. It brings a soft, fern-like texture to the winter landscape.

Why You Need It:

  • Shade Tolerant: One of the very few evergreens that thrives in shade.
  • Screening: Makes a beautiful, dense privacy hedge that doesn't look rigid.
  • Wildlife Cover: Provides essential winter shelter for small birds like chickadees.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Part Shade to Shade. It prefers cool, moist soil and does not like hot, dry, windswept sites. Mulch heavily to keep the roots cool.
