Bearded Iris

The intricate purple and yellow flower of a Bearded Iris, a hardy and drought-tolerant perennial.

The Royal Flower of Early Summer

With their complex, orchid-like blooms and sword-like foliage, Bearded Irises add an architectural presence to the garden. The "beard" refers to the fuzzy line on the lower petals (falls). Available in almost every color of the rainbow, they are a nostalgic favorite that blooms reliably year after year.

Why You Need It:

  • Drought Tolerant: Their thick rhizomes store water, making them very resilient once established.
  • Vertical Accent: The stiff, upright leaves look great even when the plant isn't blooming.
  • Fragrance: Many varieties have a sweet, grape-soda scent.

Planting Tips:

Requires Full Sun. When planting, leave the top of the rhizome (the potato-like root) slightly exposed to the sun—do not bury it deep, or it may rot.
