Hellebore (Lenten Rose)

A Hellebore flower, an evergreen and deer-resistant perennial that blooms in very early spring.

The Flower That Blooms in Snow

Hellebores are miraculous plants. They are often the very first perennial to bloom, sometimes pushing their nodding, rose-like flowers right up through the snow in late winter or early spring. They have tough, leathery, evergreen foliage that looks good year-round. They are the ultimate low-maintenance shade plant.

Why You Need It:

  • Earliest Blooms: Enjoy flowers when the rest of the garden is frozen.
  • Deer Proof: Their leaves are tough and unpalatable to deer and rabbits.
  • Dry Shade: Once established, they handle dry shade under trees beautifully.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Part Shade to Shade. Be patient—they can take a couple of years to settle in, but they are incredibly long-lived perennials.
