Hellebore (Lenten Rose)
The Flower That Blooms in Snow
Hellebores are miraculous plants. They are often the very first perennial to bloom, sometimes pushing their nodding, rose-like flowers right up through the snow in late winter or early spring. They have tough, leathery, evergreen foliage that looks good year-round. They are the ultimate low-maintenance shade plant.
Why You Need It:
- Earliest Blooms: Enjoy flowers when the rest of the garden is frozen.
- Deer Proof: Their leaves are tough and unpalatable to deer and rabbits.
- Dry Shade: Once established, they handle dry shade under trees beautifully.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Part Shade to Shade. Be patient—they can take a couple of years to settle in, but they are incredibly long-lived perennials.
