Wild Ginger

The heart-shaped leaves of Wild Ginger, a shade-tolerant and deer-resistant native groundcover.

The Secret Flower of the Forest Floor

Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense) is a fantastic native groundcover for deep shade. It has large, heart-shaped, velvety green leaves that form a dense, lush carpet. The "flower" is a strange, maroon, thimble-shaped bloom that hides under the leaves, resting on the ground to be pollinated by beetles and ants.

Why You Need It:

  • Shade Solution: Thrives in deep, dark shade where grass fails.
  • Deer Resistant: The fuzzy, spicy-smelling leaves repel deer.
  • Foliage Texture: The bold leaves contrast beautifully with fine-textured ferns.

Planting Tips:

Requires Full Shade to Part Shade and rich, moist soil. It spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a solid mat. It is deciduous, disappearing in winter.
