Tart Cherry Tree

A tart cherry tree, a hardy and edible fruit tree perfect for pies and preserves in Michigan.

Michigan's Famous Fruit

Michigan is famous for Tart Cherries (like 'Montmorency'), and for good reason. These trees are hardy, productive, and beautiful. In spring, they are covered in snowy white blossoms. In mid-summer, they hang heavy with bright red cherries that are perfect for pies, preserves, and drying.

Why You Need It:

  • Self-Pollinating: You only need one tree to get fruit (unlike apples).
  • Baking Favorite: Tart cherries retain their flavor and texture when cooked better than sweet cherries.
  • Cold Hardy: Very reliable producer in northern climates.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun with well-drained soil. Birds love cherries too, so you may need to net the tree as the fruit ripens if you want to save the harvest for yourself!
