Ironweed

Intense purple flowers of Ironweed.

Tall, Dark, and Handsome

Ironweed (Vernonia) lives up to its tough name. This robust native perennial stands tall (often 5-7 feet) on stiff stems that never flop. In late summer, it is crowned with intense, deep purple flower clusters that look like fuzzy buttons. It is a butterfly magnet and a perfect companion for Goldenrod.

Why You Need It:

  • Bold Color: The deep violet-purple is striking against yellow fall flowers.
  • Height: Great for the back of the border or a privacy screen.
  • Toughness: Thrives in wet or clay soils and is ignored by deer.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun. It loves moisture. If you want a shorter, bushier plant, you can cut the stems back by half in early June.
