The Tree with "Flexed" Bark

Musclewood (Carpinus caroliniana), also called Blue Beech or American Hornbeam, is a fascinating small native tree. It is named for its smooth, gray bark that ripples and twists, looking exactly like a flexed muscle. It is an excellent understory tree that offers great fall color in shades of orange and red.

Why You Need It:

  • Winter Interest: The unique bark is a standout feature in the winter landscape.
  • Shade Tolerant: One of the few trees that grows happily in the shade of larger trees.
  • Strong Wood: Extremely hard, durable wood resists storm damage.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Part Shade to Shade and prefers moist, rich soil. It is a slow grower, making it a perfect, low-maintenance tree for a small yard or woodland garden.
