Hakone Grass

Cascading mound of golden Hakone Grass softening a stone edge.

A Waterfall of Golden Foliage

Hakone Grass (Hakonechloa macra) is arguably the most beautiful grass for the shade garden. It has a cascading habit, with leaves that drape over each other like a waterfall. The golden or variegated varieties glow in the shade, adding light and softness to dark corners. It moves beautifully in the wind.

Why You Need It:

  • Shade Brightener: The golden foliage acts like a spotlight in shady beds.
  • Texture: Provides a soft, flowing contrast to the broad leaves of Hostas.
  • Container Plant: Looks amazing spilling over the edge of a pot.

Planting Tips:

Requires Part Shade to Shade and moisture-retentive, rich soil. It is slow-growing but worth the wait. Keep it watered during dry spells to prevent leaf scorch.
