Blue Vervain

Blue-violet spikes of Blue Vervain.

The Candelabra of the Wetlands

Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata) is a majestic native plant for damp spots. It shoots up tall, stiff stems topped with candelabra-like spikes of blue-violet flowers. These blooms open slowly from the bottom up, providing a long season of nectar for bumblebees and butterflies.

Why You Need It:

  • Rain Garden Star: Loves "wet feet" and thrives in clay or poorly drained soil.
  • Vertical Interest: Adds height (4-5 feet) without taking up much width.
  • Pollinator Support: A specialized host plant for the Common Buckeye butterfly.

Planting Tips:

Best in Full Sun and moist soil. It’s a great choice for a ditch, pond edge, or low spot in the yard where water collects after rain.
