Wild Lupine

Blue-violet flower spikes of Wild Lupine.

The Rare Beauty of the Oak Savanna

Wild Lupine (Lupinus perennis) is a stunning native with spikes of pea-like blue-violet flowers in late spring. Its palm-shaped leaves are equally attractive. It is the *only* host plant for the endangered Karner Blue butterfly. It is a plant of dry, sandy soils and open woods.

Why You Need It:

  • Butterfly Savior: Essential for the survival of the Karner Blue butterfly.
  • Sandy Soil Hero: Thrives in poor, dry, sandy spots where other plants starve.
  • Nitrogen Fixer: It naturally improves the soil by adding nitrogen.

Planting Tips:

Requires Full Sun to Part Sun and Sand/Well-Drained Soil. It has a deep taproot and cannot handle heavy clay or wet feet. Once planted, do not try to move it.
