Serviceberry

The early spring white flowers of a native Serviceberry, a tree with four-season interest and edible fruit.

The Perfect Four-Season Native Tree

Serviceberry (Amelanchier) is arguably the best small native tree for landscaping. It does it all: white flowers in spring, edible blue berries in summer (that taste like blueberries!), brilliant orange-red foliage in fall, and smooth gray bark in winter. It attracts birds like a magnet.

Why You Need It:

  • Edible Landscaping: The berries are delicious for pies, jams, or fresh eating.
  • Bird Watcher's Dream: Robins, waxwings, and orioles love the fruit.
  • Manageable Size: Fits perfectly in small urban yards or near patios.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil. It naturally grows as a multi-stemmed clump but can be pruned into a single trunk.

Our Landscape Designer's Take

The Four-Season Specimen: In our Niles landscape designs, Serviceberry is a 'Must-Have.' It’s the first tree to bloom in spring with delicate white flowers, followed by edible berries in summer that birds (and kids!) love. The fall color is a stunning orange-red that rivals any Maple.

Perfect Scale for Modern Lots: Because it stays relatively small (15-25 feet), it’s the ideal 'Anchor' for small front yards. We often plant it near a Patio to provide light shade without overwhelming the space. It’s far more resilient and lower-maintenance than more temperamental trees like Pear Trees.
