Prairie Dropseed

A mound of fine-textured Prairie Dropseed grass with airy seed heads.

The Most Elegant Native Grass

If you only plant one ornamental grass, make it Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis). It forms a perfect, fine-textured, emerald-green mound that looks like a fountain. In late summer, it sends up airy, see-through flower stalks that smell distinctly like coriander or hot buttered popcorn.

Why You Need It:

  • Refined Look: Looks neat and tidy all season, never messy.
  • Fragrance: The unique scent is a delight on warm autumn evenings.
  • Fall Color: Turns a stunning deep pumpkin-orange in late fall.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Full Sun and dry, rocky, or average soil. It is slow to grow at first (the "sleep, creep, leap" habit), but it is incredibly long-lived and worth the patience.
