Burning Bush

A Burning Bush shrub displaying its famously brilliant, fiery-red fall foliage.

A Blaze of Autumn Fire

Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus) is named for one reason: its fall color. In October, the foliage turns a shockingly bright, fluorescent red that stops traffic. During the rest of the year, it is a neat, dense green shrub with interesting "winged" bark on the stems. It is extremely popular for hedges and foundation plantings.

Why You Need It:

  • Unmatched Fall Color: Few plants can compete with its intensity.
  • Versatile: Can be sheared into a formal box or left natural.
  • Tough: Tolerates almost any soil type, from sand to clay.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun for the best red color (it will be more pinkish in shade). Note: This plant can be invasive in some woodland areas; consider native alternatives like Fothergilla or Blueberry if you live near a forest.
