Karl Foerster Grass

Vertical, wheat-colored stalks of Karl Foerster grass lining a walkway.

The Soldier of the Garden

'Karl Foerster' Feather Reed Grass is the world's most popular ornamental grass for a reason: it stands at attention. Unlike other grasses that flop over, it grows in a strict, upright vertical column. Its golden wheat-like seed heads appear early in summer and last all through winter, standing up to even heavy snow.

Why You Need It:

  • Architectural Screen: Plant in a row to create a "see-through" fence or screen.
  • Narrow Footprint: Adds height (5 feet) without taking up width (2 feet).
  • Winter Interest: The golden stalks look stunning against a snowy backdrop.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Full Sun. It tolerates heavy clay soil better than almost any other grass. Cut it back to the ground in late winter.
