Rhododendron/Azalea

A cluster of bright pink Rhododendron flowers, a showy evergreen shrub for Michigan gardens.

The Showstoppers of Spring

Rhododendrons and Azaleas are the royalty of the spring garden. These woody shrubs are famous for their massive, colorful trusses of flowers in shades of pink, purple, red, white, and yellow. Rhododendrons generally have large, evergreen leaves, while Azaleas have smaller leaves (some deciduous, some evergreen).

Why You Need It:

  • Spectacular Blooms: Few plants can match the sheer volume of flower color.
  • Evergreen Structure: (Rhododendrons) Provide broadleaf green structure all winter.
  • Shade Lover: They bring vibrant color to woodland gardens.

Planting Tips:

They require Acidic, Well-Drained Soil and Part Shade (dappled light is best). They have shallow roots, so mulch is mandatory to keep them cool and moist. Do not bury the root ball deep!
