Bottlebrush Buckeye

Large white flower spikes of a Bottlebrush Buckeye in a shady garden.

The Ultimate Flowering Shrub for Shade

Most shade shrubs are grown for leaves, but the Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) is grown for its spectacular flowers. In mid-summer, it lights up shady corners with massive, 12-inch white flower spikes that resemble bottle brushes. It attracts Swallowtail butterflies even in the deep shade.

Why You Need It:

  • Summer Blooms: blooms when most other shade plants are finished.
  • Massive Impact: Grows wide and suckering, eventually forming a tropical-looking colony.
  • Deer Resistant: Generally ignored by deer.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Part Shade to Full Shade. Give it room! It grows wider than it does tall, making it perfect for underplanting tall trees or filling a large woodland edge.
