Steeplebush

Pink steeple-shaped flower plumes of Steeplebush.

Rosy Spires for Wet Spots

Steeplebush (Spiraea tomentosa) is our beautiful native Spirea. Unlike the common landscape Spirea, this one has an upright habit and produces steeple-shaped plumes of rosy-pink flowers in late summer. The leaves have a fuzzy, felted underside (tomentosa means "fuzzy").

Why You Need It:

  • Native Beauty: A wonderful, eco-friendly alternative to non-native butterfly bushes.
  • Wet Soil Lover: Thrives in boggy, wet soils and rain gardens.
  • Deer Resistant: The fuzzy leaves make it unappealing to deer.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun and Moist Soil. It spreads by suckers to form a patch, making it great for naturalizing in a low-lying meadow.
