Steeplebush
Rosy Spires for Wet Spots
Steeplebush (Spiraea tomentosa) is our beautiful native Spirea. Unlike the common landscape Spirea, this one has an upright habit and produces steeple-shaped plumes of rosy-pink flowers in late summer. The leaves have a fuzzy, felted underside (tomentosa means "fuzzy").
Why You Need It:
- Native Beauty: A wonderful, eco-friendly alternative to non-native butterfly bushes.
- Wet Soil Lover: Thrives in boggy, wet soils and rain gardens.
- Deer Resistant: The fuzzy leaves make it unappealing to deer.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Full Sun and Moist Soil. It spreads by suckers to form a patch, making it great for naturalizing in a low-lying meadow.
