Wild Geranium

Soft pink-lavender flowers of Wild Geranium blooming in a woodland setting.

The Perfect Woodland Groundcover

Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) is arguably the best native geranium for the garden. In late spring, it forms a loose mound covered in 1-inch pink or lavender flowers. Unlike weedy varieties, it forms a respectful, tidy clump. Its palm-like leaves look great all summer and often turn red in the fall.

Why You Need It:

  • Long Blooming: Blooms for weeks, much longer than most spring ephemeral wildflowers.
  • Adaptable: Happy in full sun (with moisture) or deep shade.
  • Pollinator Friendly: Provides high-quality nectar for native bees.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Part Shade to Shade. It prefers rich, moist soil but is surprisingly drought-tolerant once established. It is a "social" plant that weaves nicely among ferns.
