Creeping Phlox
A Carpet of Spring Color
In April and May, Creeping Phlox steals the show. This low-growing groundcover completely smothers itself in flowers, creating a vibrant carpet of pink, purple, blue, or white. It is the perfect plant for cascading over rock walls, edging a flower border, or covering a difficult sunny slope.
Why You Need It:
- Erosion Control: Its dense mat of foliage helps hold soil in place.
- Weed Suppression: Grows thick enough to prevent weeds from poking through.
- Evergreen: The needle-like foliage stays green year-round.
Planting Tips:
Needs Full Sun to bloom best. After flowering, you can shear it back slightly to keep the mat tight and tidy for the rest of the year.

Our Landscape Designer's Take
The "Living Mulch": We love using Creeping Phlox to solve slope issues. If you have a steep bank where rain washes away mulch, we plant Phlox. Over 2-3 years, it knits together to form a solid carpet of green that locks the soil in place.
Spring Impact: For two weeks in spring, it creates a literal carpet of color (Pink, Blue, or White). We frequently plant this cascading over the top of our Boulder Retaining Walls. The visual of the flowers "spilling" over the hard stone softens the rock and blends the hardscaping into the nature around it.
