Red Maple

A Red Maple tree showing its famous brilliant red fall color, a hardy native tree for Michigan.

The Fire of the Fall Forest

The Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is named for a reason: its flowers, twigs, and especially its fall foliage are brilliant red. It is one of the most widespread and adaptable native trees in eastern North America. It grows fast and provides excellent shade, turning into a scarlet torch in autumn.

Why You Need It:

  • Fall Color: The quintessential tree for brilliant red autumn foliage.
  • Fast Growth: Establishes quickly to provide shade sooner than oaks.
  • Adaptable: Thrives in wet swamps (""Swamp Maple"") and dry uplands alike.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade. It is very tolerant of wet soils. Note: Do not plant too close to sidewalks, as its surface roots can eventually lift pavement.
