Maidenhair Fern
Airy Elegance for the Shade
The Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum pedatum) is the most delicate and sophisticated of our native ferns. It features wiry, black stems that hold up fan-shaped leaflets in a horizontal, swirling pattern. It looks incredibly fragile, like floating green lace, but it is surprisingly tough and hardy once established.
Why You Need It:
- Unique Texture: The horizontal layering adds a distinct architectural look.
- Black Stems: The contrast between the dark stems and bright green leaves is stunning.
- Deer Resistant: Generally ignored by wildlife.
Planting Tips:
Requires Full Shade to Part Shade and rich, moist, humus-y soil. It loves growing near rotting logs or compost-rich woodland floors. Do not let it dry out.
