Foamflower

The airy, white flower spikes of a Foamflower, a native groundcover for shady, moist gardens.

A Frothy Carpet for the Shade

Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) is a charming native groundcover. It forms a low mat of maple-shaped leaves that often have burgundy veins. In spring, it sends up airy spikes of white flowers that look like foam or bottle brushes. It spreads by runners to form a dense, weed-suppressing carpet in the shade.

Why You Need It:

  • Shade Groundcover: An excellent native alternative to English Ivy or Vinca.

  • Three-Season Interest: Flowers in spring, lovely foliage in summer, and bronze color in fall.

  • Deer Resistant: Generally ignored by deer and rabbits.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Shade to Part Shade. It prefers cool, moist, organic-rich soil. It looks beautiful planted under Rhododendrons or Azaleas.
