Marsh Marigold
The Sunshine of the Swamp
Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) is a joyful sign of spring in wet areas. It forms a tidy mound of glossy, heart-shaped green leaves. In April or May, it is smothered in waxy, bright yellow flowers that look like giant buttercups. It is a true ephemeral of the wetlands.
Why You Need It:
- Wet Soil Solution: Thrives in standing water, pond edges, or boggy ditches.
- Early Color: Blooms when most other plants are just waking up.
- Frog Habitat: The large leaves provide excellent cover for frogs and aquatic life.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade in wet soil. It is perfect for a rain garden or alongside a stream. It goes dormant in summer if the soil dries out, which is normal.
