Joe Pye Weed

The large, mauve-pink flower heads of a Joe Pye Weed, a tall native perennial that supports wildlife.

The Monarch Butterfly Magnet

Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium) is a majestic native giant. Growing 5 to 7 feet tall, it is topped with massive, dusty-pink flower heads that smell like vanilla. It is arguably the single best plant for attracting large numbers of butterflies in late summer. It creates an incredible backdrop for a native garden.

Why You Need It:

  • Butterfly Heaven: Often covered in dozens of Swallowtails and Monarchs at once.
  • Vertical Drama: Adds significant height and structure to the back of a border.
  • Clay Soil Tolerant: Loves wet feet and thrives in heavy clay.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun to Part Sun. It loves moisture, so it's perfect for a rain garden or low spot. If it's too tall for your space, look for the dwarf variety 'Little Joe'.
