Virginia Bluebells

A carpet of blue, bell-shaped Virginia Bluebells, a native groundcover for shade that blooms in early spring.

A Fleeting Magical Moment

Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) create one of the most enchanting sights in the spring woodland. They emerge early with pink buds that open into nodding, trumpet-shaped flowers of the purest sky blue. They are a true "ephemeral," meaning they bloom, set seed, and then go dormant and disappear by mid-summer.

Why You Need It:

  • True Blue Color: A rare and stunning shade of blue found in few other plants.

  • Zero Maintenance: They require absolutely no care once established.

  • Naturalizing: They spread slowly to form a breathtaking blue carpet under trees.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Shade to Part Shade with moist, rich soil. Because they disappear in summer, interplant them with Ferns or Hostas, which will grow up to cover the empty spots.
