Pear Tree
The Dessert of the Orchard
Pear trees are classic, long-lived fruit trees that offer a harvest of sweet, buttery fruit in late summer or fall. They are generally hardier and easier to grow than peaches. In spring, they are covered in clouds of white blossoms. European pears (like Bartlett) are soft and melting; Asian pears are crisp like apples.
Why You Need It:
- Easy to Grow: Generally suffer from fewer pests and diseases than apples.
- Vertical Habit: Many pear varieties grow upright, fitting into narrower spaces.
- Heavy Yields: A mature tree can produce bushels of fruit.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Full Sun. While some are self-fertile, you will always get much more fruit if you plant two different varieties. They tolerate clay soil better than most other fruit trees.
