You need _____ Tons of Mason Sand

How To Measure

How To Measure: For pool bases, use the diameter of the pool. For masonry work, a general rule is 1 ton of sand for every 1,000 bricks.

Depth Recommendations

  • Pool Liner Base: 2 inches (plus material for the perimeter cove).

  • Paver Screed Layer: 1 inch (Maximum—do not go deeper or your pavers will shift).

  • Sandbox: 6–10 inches.

The Precision Multi-Purpose Sand: Clean, Washed, and Ultra-Fine

Mason Sand is the "refined" cousin of standard fill sand. It has been washed and screened to remove the pebbles and debris that plague cheaper sands. In the Michiana area, it is the gold standard for masonry mortar and above-ground pool installations where a smooth, puncture-free surface is non-negotiable.

A Professional’s Note on Paver Bases: Many DIYers make the mistake of using 3–4 inches of sand as a base for patios. In our local climate, this leads to settling and uneven stones. While Mason Sand is excellent for a thin 1-inch "screed layer" over 6–8 inches of compacted gravel, we actually recommend our "Man Sand" or a limestone-based open-grade system for the most durable Michiana patios.

FAQ

Can I use this sand for my kid's sandbox?

Yes! Unlike "bank run" sand which can be dusty or contain sharp pebbles, our Mason Sand is washed and screened. It’s clean, soft, and won't stain clothes. It is a safer, higher-quality alternative for sandboxes and play areas.

I'm installing an above-ground pool. How do I use this?

Beyond just leveling the floor, we recommend using the sand to create a "cove" around the inside perimeter of the pool wall. Build a 6-inch 45-degree wedge of sand against the wall before the liner goes in. This prevents the liner from ballooning under the bottom rail and significantly extends the life of your pool.

Is this the same as the sand used for paver joints?

No. For the joints between pavers, we recommend Polymeric Sand. Mason sand is loose and will wash away or invite weeds in the gaps. Mason sand is meant to go under the pavers or into a mortar mix, not to finish the joints.
