How To Measure
Measure the square footage of your patio or pool area. For paver bases, accuracy is key to getting the correct level.
Depth Recommendations
Paver Base (Screed Layer): 1 inch.
Pool Liner Base: 2 inches.
The Smooth Base for Perfect Patios
Mason sand is a fine, washed sand free of pebbles and large grit. While it is often used in mortar mixing (hence the name), in hardscaping, we use it primarily as the final bedding layer for pavers and flagstone. It compacts tightly and provides a smooth, level surface to lay stone on.
FAQ
What is Mason Sand used for?
We use it as the "screed" layer (final 1 inch) under paver patios and swimming pool liners. It creates a perfectly flat surface that doesn't have sharp rocks that could puncture a liner.
Can I use this for a kid's sandbox?
We advise against it. Mason sand is unwashed regarding fine silts, which means it can stain clothes orange/brown when wet. Ask for "White Play Sand" if you are filling a sandbox.
Does it prevent ants?
Sand is an invite for ants. When installing pavers, we recommend using "Polymeric Sand" for the joints between the bricks, as it hardens like glue and stops ants from tunneling.
