How To Measure
Measure the length and width of the garden bed in feet. If you are using this between flagstones or large pavers, roughly calculate the square footage of just the open gaps (this can be tricky, so it’s always best to order a little extra).
Depth Recommendations
Decorative Garden Beds: 3 inches (Minimum required for full coverage).
Accents Between Flagstone/Pavers: 2–3 inches.
Hardscaper Tip: Because it’s bright white, you don't want the black fabric showing through at all. Don't skimp on depth.
White Marble: High-Contrast Elegance for Decorative Beds & Accents
White Marble is the ultimate statement stone for high-end landscape design. With its bright, reflective surface, it creates a striking contrast against dark mulch, vibrant green shrubs, and modern dark-colored homes. In the Michiana area, we see it used beautifully to define property lines, surround pool decks, or act as a sleek filler between large-format architectural pavers.
However, because this stone is a brilliant white, it requires strategic placement. To keep it looking pristine, we highly recommend installing it in areas that receive ample sunlight. Placing white marble in deep, damp shade or directly under heavy-dropping deciduous trees (like maples or oaks) can lead to a buildup of organic matter that may stain the stone yellow or invite algae. When placed in the right sunny spot, it is an unbeatable, classic aesthetic.
FAQ
Do I absolutely need landscape fabric under White Marble?
Yes, this is non-negotiable. We mandate using a heavy-duty, non-woven geotextile fabric under all white marble. If you skip this step, the heavy Michiana clay and dirt will bleed up through the rocks every time it rains, completely ruining the bright white aesthetic. The fabric keeps the stone isolated and clean forever.
Can I use this to build a walking path?
We don't recommend using loose marble as a primary walking path. Because the stones are angular and stay relatively loose, it isn't the most comfortable or stable surface for heavy foot traffic. Instead, we love using it as an accent—it looks phenomenal filling the 2-to-4-inch gaps between large flagstones or modern concrete step pavers.
How do I keep it from turning green or yellow over time?
The secret to bright white stone is sunlight and air movement. Moisture and rotting organic matter are the enemies of white marble. In the fall, make sure you promptly blow off any dead leaves before they have a chance to get wet, rot, and leach tannins (which cause yellow/brown staining) onto the rock. As long as you keep the bed blown clean, the sun will do the rest of the work.
