Solomon's Seal
Architectural Grace for the Woodland
Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum) is elegance defined. It sends up tall, arching stems that bow gracefully under the weight of dangling white bell flowers in spring. The foliage often turns a lovely golden-yellow in fall. The variegated variety (with white edges) is especially popular for brightening shady spots.
Why You Need It:
- Graceful Form: The arching stems create a beautiful rhythmic pattern in the garden.
- Toughness: Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant for a shade plant.
- Deer Resistant: Generally ignored by deer.
Planting Tips:
Thrives in Full Shade to Part Shade. It spreads slowly by thick rhizomes to form a dense colony. It looks fantastic planted with Ferns and Bleeding Hearts.
