Black Gum
The Best Native Tree for Fall Color
If you want a shade tree that turns heads in October, the Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) is it. Its glossy dark green leaves turn a brilliant, glowing scarlet-red (sometimes with purple and orange) that rivals any maple. It has a strong, straight trunk and horizontal branches, giving it a dignified silhouette.
Why You Need It:
- Spectacular Fall Foliage: Often the most colorful tree in the autumn forest.
- Wildlife Support: Produces small blue fruits that are high-fat energy for migrating birds.
- Taproot: Deep roots mean it doesn't lift sidewalks or compete heavily with lawn grass.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Full Sun to Part Sun. It prefers acidic, moist soil but is surprisingly adaptable. Because of its deep taproot, start with a smaller tree, as they can be tricky to transplant when large.
