Rattlesnake Master
A Yucca-Like Native for the Midwest
Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) is a plant that stops people in their tracks. It has spiky, blue-green foliage that looks like a desert Yucca, but it's actually a native of the wet prairie. In summer, it sends up tall stalks topped with unique, white, spherical flower heads that look like thistles or golf balls.
Why You Need It:
- Architectural Drama: Adds a bold, structural, desert-like look to the garden.
- Pollinator Magnet: Attracts an incredible diversity of specialized wasps and bees.
- Toughness: Thrives in clay, sand, wet, or dry soil.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Full Sun. It has a deep taproot and lives for decades, so plant it where you want it to stay. It looks fantastic planted in groups of three.
