Switchgrass
The Prairie's Vertical Accent
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a tall, upright native grass that is as tough as it is beautiful. It forms a tight, vertical column of blue-green foliage. In late summer, it is topped with airy, pink-tinged flower panicles that look like clouds hovering over the plant. It turns a beautiful golden-beige in winter.
Why You Need It:
- Vertical Screen: Excellent for screening or adding height to the back of a border.
- Winter Standing: Stays upright through heavy snow, providing winter interest and bird cover.
- Deep Roots: Its massive root system stabilizes soil and filters rainwater.
Planting Tips:
Plant in Full Sun. It is very adaptable to different soils. Cut it back to the ground in late winter before new growth starts.
