This New Buffalo homeowner had a beautiful bluestone entry — square tiles set on the diagonal with a clean border, framed by river-rock pillars. The problem wasn't the stone. Someone before us had repaired a few of the mortar joints and done it poorly: the wrong mortar color and sloppy work that stood out against the rest of the entry every time you walked up to the door. They wanted it fixed right — blended so you couldn't tell, and done in a way that would actually hold. So that's what we did.
What We Did
This was a precision repair, not a teardown. A handful of pieces — two to three tiles and the joints around them — were the trouble spots, so we focused there and left the sound majority of the entry untouched. First we carefully chipped out the failed mortar the previous contractor had packed in, clearing the joints back to clean, solid edges without damaging the surrounding bluestone.
Then we reset the loose pieces and re-mortared the joints with a custom color-matched mortar blended to the tone of the original joints. This is the part that makes or breaks a repair like this: match the color and tool the joints to the same profile as the rest of the entry, and the fix disappears. Get it wrong — as the last person did — and every glance at the porch lands on the patch. Ours blends into the field so you have to look for it.
Just as important, it's built to last. Properly cleared joints, pieces reset solid, and quality mortar packed and tooled correctly mean these repairs won't crumble or pop the way the previous work was starting to — they'll hold through New Buffalo's freeze-thaw seasons like the rest of the entry.
