New Buffalo Michigan Bluestone Overlay

This New Buffalo home was built with a clean, modern farmhouse aesthetic — black windows, board-and-batten siding, crisp lines. But the builder's poured concrete front steps came out rough and uneven, and they didn't match the level of finish the rest of the home was aiming for. From the start, the plan was to overlay them in natural stone. We're the crew that made that plan a reality.
What We Did
We overlaid the entire covered front porch and the full run of steps in select thermal bluestone — a dense, naturally slip-resistant natural stone with a soft blue-grey tone that pairs perfectly with the home's black-and-white palette. We started the perimeter with a thicker border stone to frame the surface and hold a crisp edge, then set 24"x24" bluestone pavers throughout the field.
The homeowner wanted a seamless, jointless look, so we hand-cut every paver to fit tight against its neighbor — no gaps, no filler, just stone meeting stone. This is a dry-laid system, set over non-woven geotextile fabric and a leveling course of sand. It's a deliberate choice over a bonded overlay: a dry-laid surface lets water pass and drain freely instead of trapping moisture against the slab, which matters through Michigan's freeze-thaw seasons.
During the setting process we also refined the slope from roughly 2% down to 1%. It's a small adjustment with a big payoff — the surface still sheds water properly, but it looks and feels noticeably more level underfoot and reads cleaner along the edges when you view the porch from the side.
The result is a front entry that finally matches the home it belongs to — a high-end natural stone porch and staircase that looks like it was part of the design from day one.
