Niles MI Natural Stone Fire Pit

This Niles homeowner already loved gathering around a fire — but the small store-bought ring they had wasn't built to last. They wanted something more permanent, more substantial, and hardy enough to stand up to years of use and Michigan weather. So we built them a fieldstone fire pit and a proper gravel gathering space to go with it.
What We Did
We built the fire pit from large natural fieldstone boulders — heavy, solid granite fieldstones set in a ring around the fire. Unlike a thin metal ring or a few small rocks, fieldstone boulders hold heat, won't warp or burn out, and only look better with age. This is a fire pit that will be here for the long haul.
Around the pit, we created a generous pea-stone seating area — a clean, defined circle with plenty of room for a full ring of chairs. Underneath the pea stone, we laid non-woven geotextile fabric across the entire footprint. That fabric is what keeps the gravel from mixing into the soil below and keeps weeds from pushing up through the surface, so the area stays clean and low-maintenance for years. With a well-draining pea-stone surface, no heavy base is needed — the stone does the work.
The result is a true backyard destination: a durable natural fire pit surrounded by a comfortable, defined space made for long evenings, good company, and plenty of s'mores.
