False Indigo (Baptisia)

The blue-green foliage and purple flower spikes of False Indigo, a hardy and long-lived native plant.

The Perennial that Acts Like a Shrub

False Indigo (Baptisia) is a native prairie powerhouse. It looks like a shrub, forming a large, rounded mound of attractive blue-green foliage, but it is actually a long-lived perennial. In late spring, it sends up tall spikes of pea-like flowers in blue, yellow, or white. It is incredibly tough and can live for decades with zero care.

Why You Need It:

  • Drought Proof: Its deep taproot makes it virtually impervious to dry spells.
  • Long Lived: Once established, it is almost impossible to kill.
  • Winter Interest: The charcoal-black seed pods rattle in the wind and look great against snow.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun. Choose its spot carefully—because of its massive root system, it resents being moved.
