Prairie Smoke

The unique, feathery pink seed heads of a Prairie Smoke plant, a drought-tolerant native perennial.

Whimsy for the Rock Garden

Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum) is a native plant that looks like it came from a Dr. Seuss book. In spring, it has nodding pink flowers. But the real show happens when they go to seed—the seed heads turn into upright, feathery, pinkish-gray plumes that look like puffs of smoke rising from the ground.

Why You Need It:

  • Unique Seed Heads: One of the most photographed native plants for its "smoke."
  • Groundcover: Spreads slowly to form a dense mat of fern-like foliage.
  • Toughness: Thrives in hot, dry, sandy, or gravelly spots.

Planting Tips:

Plant in Full Sun with Excellent Drainage. It loves sand or gravel. It is perfect for the front edge of a sunny border or a rock garden.
