Little Bluestem

A clump of Little Bluestem ornamental grass, a drought-tolerant native with great fall color.

The Kaleidoscope of the Prairie

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a native ornamental grass that offers four seasons of beauty. In spring, it is blue-green; in summer, it develops hints of purple; in fall, it turns a blazing copper-orange that glows in the sun. It stays upright through winter, providing habitat for insects.

Why You Need It:

  • Fall Color: One of the best grasses for autumn reds and oranges.
  • Drought Proof: Deep roots make it impervious to dry summers.
  • Ecological Value: A host plant for several skipper butterflies.

Planting Tips:

Needs Full Sun. Do not fertilize or over-water it, or it will get "floppy." It loves lean, dry soil and neglect.
