Dune & Sand Stabilization in Bridgman

The rolling dunes and ravines near Lake Michigan make Bridgman beautiful, but they also create erosion risks. We engineer structural retaining walls that stabilize your property and create usable flat space. We understand the local regulations regarding dune construction. By using proper drainage stone and geogrid reinforcement, we ensure your wall holds back the earth without failing. We turn steep, sandy slopes into functional garden terraces or patio areas.

Managing Hydrostatic Pressure with the "Burrito Drain"

Retaining walls fail because of water, not weight. Our engineering standard in Bridgman addresses this reality head-on. We construct a "Burrito Drain" system behind every wall we build. This consists of a minimum 1-foot column of clean stone, fully wrapped in non-woven filter fabric, running the entire length and height of the wall. This system prevents soil from clogging the drainage zone while allowing water to flow freely to a perforated pipe at the base. For grade transitions, we prioritize large, dry-laid natural stone slabs or premium modular block, avoiding wet-laid steps that are prone to cracking in Michigan winters.

Technical Specifications:

  • Drainage System: "Burrito Drain" (Clean stone column wrapped in fabric).

  • Base: Compacted clean stone leveling pad (frost resistant).

  • Adhesives: SRW Quick Set high-strength adhesive.

  • Reinforcement: Geogrid soil stabilization for load-bearing walls.

  • Water Exit: 4” Perforated Drain Tile daylighted to lower grade.

Execution & Finish
We bury the base course of the wall to ensure resistance against sliding and overturning. We mechanically compact the backfill in lifts to prevent settling of the lawn or patio above. The wall is capped with high-strength adhesive to secure the coping units. We grade the soil behind the wall to swale water away from the structure. Should any settling occur years down the line, our service-first approach means we are available to return and adjust the system, ensuring your wall stands the test of time.

Holding Back the Dunes

The rolling topography of Bridgman often involves building into or retaining sand dunes. This is high-stakes engineering. A wall that fails here doesn't just lean; it can cause a slide. We specialize in Critical Dune retaining wall construction. We use geogrid soil reinforcement layers that extend deep into the slope, anchoring the wall block to the earth mass behind it.

We also understand the legal side, navigating the MDEQ Part 353 permit requirements for construction in dune areas. We use specific "dune-friendly" drainage systems that prevent water from cutting channels behind the wall. Whether you are creating a flat play area for the grandkids or stabilizing a threatened bluff, we build structures that respect the power of the shifting sand.

FAQ

Will the wall stand up to lake winds?

The wall itself is heavy and solid. The main concern is sandy soil erosion. We use filter fabric to keep the sand from washing through the cracks.

Can you build steps into the wall?

Yes. We can integrate grand staircases or simple garden steps directly into the retaining wall structure for safe access to different levels.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. We build relationships. If a block cracks or a cap comes loose years later, we will come back and fix it. We value our Bridgman customers.
