Hillside Solutions in Buchanan

The rolling terrain that makes Buchanan beautiful also creates grading challenges. We engineer heavy-duty retaining walls that tame slopes and prevent erosion. Whether you are near McCoy Creek or on a hillside lot, we focus on drainage. We install commercial-grade systems behind every wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure, ensuring the structure never leans. We combine this strength with aesthetics, using materials that blend with the natural, wooded feel of the area.

Managing Gravity and Hydrostatic Pressure

Retaining wall failure is rarely caused by the block itself; it is caused by water pressure building up behind the wall. Our "Rugged Luxury" standard dictates that every wall acts as a drainage system first and a structure second. We construct a "Burrito Drain" system behind the entire length and height of the wall. This consists of a minimum 1-foot column of clean stone, fully wrapped in non-woven filter fabric. This prevents soil fines from clogging the stone while allowing groundwater to flow freely to the perforated drain pipe at the base. For walls exceeding 4 feet or bearing load, we integrate Geogrid soil reinforcement to tie the block face back into the retained earth.

Technical Specifications:

  • Drainage System: "Burrito Drain" (Clean stone column wrapped in non-woven fabric).

  • Base Course: Buried structural block on compacted granular leveling pad.

  • Reinforcement: Biaxial Geogrid (for walls >4ft or surcharged loads).

  • Backfill: Low-compaction clean stone to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

  • Water Management: 4” Perforated Drain Tile daylighted to lower grade.

Execution & Finish
We mechanically compact the backfill in 6-8 inch lifts to prevent future settling of the lawn or patio above. The wall is capped with high-strength adhesive to secure the coping units. We ensure global stability by verifying the toe-bury depth matches the wall's height requirements. The final grade is swaled to direct surface water over the wall rather than allowing it to pool behind the cap, ensuring long-term structural integrity.

Managing Buchanan’s Rolling Hills

Buchanan’s beautiful, rolling topography often means that usable yard space is at a premium. We design and build structural retaining walls that tame these slopes, creating flat areas for patios, gardens, or driveways. Whether you need to stabilize a bank along a creek or terrace a steep front yard, we use materials that blend naturally with the wooded landscape. From rugged natural boulders to clean-lined structural blocks, our walls are designed to be both functional barriers and aesthetic features that add value to your home.

We understand that in our climate, water is the enemy of every wall. That’s why we engineer our walls to drain efficiently. Behind every structure, we install a minimum of one foot of clean drain stone, fully wrapped in geotextile fabric—our signature "burrito" method. This ensures that groundwater can escape freely without washing away the soil, preventing the hydrostatic pressure that causes walls to lean or collapse. We build walls that hold their ground, protecting your property investment for the long haul.

FAQ

Can you build a wall to widen my driveway?

Yes. Cutting into a slope and retaining it is a great way to gain extra parking space. We engineer the wall to hold the hillside back safely.

Do you match existing stone?

We do our best to find a match. We can bring samples to your Buchanan home to compare against your existing hardscaping or foundation stone.

Is it expensive?

It's an investment, but it adds usable square footage to your property. We can provide different material options to help fit your budget.
