Black Chokeberry

The white spring flowers of a native Black Chokeberry, a hardy shrub that produces edible berries.

The Native Superfruit Shrub

Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is a landscape workhorse. In spring, it’s covered in white flowers. In summer, it produces dark purple berries that are incredibly high in antioxidants (healthier than blueberries!). In fall, it puts on a spectacular show of fiery red foliage. It’s beautiful, edible, and tough.

Why You Need It:

  • Edible Fruit: Berries are tart fresh but make amazing jams, syrups, and smoothies.
  • Adaptable: Thrives in wet soil, clay, or ordinary garden loam.
  • Three-Season Interest: Flowers, fruit, and stunning fall color.

Planting Tips:

Thrives in Full Sun to Part Sun. More sun equals more fruit and better fall color. It naturally suckers to form a colony, so give it room to spread or prune to control.
