Lady's Mantle

Water droplets beading up on the leaves of Lady's Mantle.

Jewels in the Garden

Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) is an old-fashioned favorite grown for its enchanting foliage. The soft, scalloped, chartreuse leaves are covered in fine hairs that catch water droplets. After a rain or heavy dew, these droplets bead up and glisten like diamonds or quicksilver. In early summer, it produces frothy sprays of lime-yellow flowers.

Why You Need It:

  • Edging Plant: Its low, mounding habit makes it perfect for softening the edge of a path.
  • Groundcover: Planted en masse, it forms a dense, weed-suppressing carpet.
  • Cut Flower: The chartreuse flowers are a classic "filler" in bouquets.

Planting Tips:

Prefers Part Shade but tolerates sun in cooler climates if kept moist. If the foliage looks tired in mid-summer, shear it back, and it will flush out fresh new leaves.
